Delta State and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were the cynosure of all eyes as the 2013 MPN/STAN National Science Quiz Competition came to a close at Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State.

Delta State team comprising Owodeha Ashaka and Eyehova Ejiroghene fend off strong challenge from Osun and Cross River states to emerge winner in the Primary School quiz category while FCT won the Secondary School quiz category, beating Abia and Akwa Ibom that came second and third respectively. FCT was represented by Ukogu Obinna and Okeke Victoria.

The annual event, organised by Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and bankrolled by Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), attracted participation from the country’s 36 states and FCT.

Speaking at the event’s grand finale, Mr. Paul Arinze, General Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Mobil Producing Nigeria, said the need to encourage science education through strategic investment was the reason behind the sponsorship of the competition in the last 18 years.

He said: “The competition aligns with ExxonMobil’s commitment that investing in education, especially science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, benefits the country and serves as a catalyst for economic and technological development.

“It is our conviction that by supporting education, especially STEM, we are making an investment in our future by nurturing the next generation of science professionals and equipping them with a strong foundation for the future.”

Some of the other categories where winners emerged were written quiz, project (theme and free style) and teacher’s project. The winners went home with trophies and cash prizes. A total sum of N1.7million was won by the winners.
