‘Nigerian PR Agencies Need to Adopt Best Practices’ – Muyiwa Akande

Your Name: Muyiwa Akande

Designation/Title: Account Director

In 140 characters, what does your job entail? – I supervise a number of accounts including ExxonMobil, Dragnet Solutions, Camora, among others. I work with the Account Managers to meet and exceed expectations of clients. I interface with the clients and the media while I also coordinate strategy sessions.

What’s the busiest time of your work day and what makes it so? — No two days are the same. The busiest time of the day is unpredictable. It depends on a number of factors: client, major events, CEO, tasks at hand, etc.

What are your top two sources of news & how often do you check them? — Facebook and Twitter

Which social platform are you on and which do you use often? — Facebook, twitter and linkedin. Of the three, I use twitter the most.

What do you like best about your job? — Ability to come up with strategic insights that benefit the clients. Also, providing guidance and mentorship to people I supervise excites me greatly.

How do you think PR trends in your region differ from other regions? — In developed climes, there has been a remarkable shift in PR measurement indices. While we still hold on to the parameter of computing the number of newspaper cuttings viz-a-viz the advertising equivalent, PR practitioners abroad are now measuring based on the contribution of PR to the realization of the client’s business objectives. We can’t afford to lag behind. We need to adopt best practices.

What’s one thing you wish you knew when you first began your career? –Can’t think of any for now.

What’s your favourite part of the Mediacraft culture? – The demand for excellence. The CEO drives everybody to imbibe the spirit of giving the best and maintaining the high standard the agency has set in the industry.

Do you feel your work in PR makes an impact and how do you think it’ll impact tomorrow? — I believe the client will be in a better position to do this assessment. However, I feel in my own little way, I have contributed, just like others, to lift up my company and improve the lot of our clients. For the future, day by day, the clients are demanding for more creative ways to tell their stories. I believe it is my job to match and exceed their expectations.
